International Women’s Day (IWD) is an annual global holiday held on March 8 to honor women’s cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements. It also serves as a focal point in the women’s rights movement, drawing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
IWD arose from labor movements in North America and Europe in the early twentieth century. The first version was allegedly a “Women’s Day” organized by the Socialist Party of America on February 28, 1909, in New York City. This prompted German delegates at the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference to propose that “a special Women’s Day” be organized annually, albeit without a specific date; the following year saw the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women’s Day across Europe.
Following the granting of suffrage to women in Soviet Russia in 1917 (the beginning of the February Revolution), IWD was declared a national holiday on March 8; it was later observed on that date by the socialist movement and communist countries. Until the late 1960s, the holiday was associated with far-left movements and governments. It was then adopted by the global feminist movement. Following the United Nations’ adoption of it in 1977, it became a widely observed global holiday.

International Women’s Day History
Susan B. Anthony was a political activist and women’s rights advocate. Following the Civil War, she fought for the 14th Amendment, which was intended to grant citizenship to all naturalized and native-born Americans in the hope that it would include suffrage rights. Even though the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, it did not guarantee their right to vote. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony founded the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) in 1869 to continue the fight for women’s rights.
Women faced pay disparities, a lack of voting rights, and were overworked in the early 1900s. In response, 15,000 women marched through New York City in 1908, demanding their rights. The first National Women’s Day was observed in 1909, in accordance with a Socialist Party of America declaration. Until 1913, this was observed on the last Sunday of February.
Clara Zetkin, a German suffragist and Women’s Office leader, organized an International Women’s Conference in August 1910. Zetkin proposed an annual Women’s Day, and the following year, International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with over one million people attending rallies. The 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920, and white women were granted the right to vote in the United States.
The women’s liberation movement occurred in the 1960s, and the effort resulted in the passage of the Voting Rights Act, which granted all women the right to vote. When the internet became more widely available, feminism and the fight against gender inequality saw a resurgence. Every year, we commemorate International Women’s Day in the hope of achieving a completely equal society.
International Women’s Day Significance
International Women’s Day is not solely the responsibility of a single government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network, or media hub. International Women’s Day was established and has been celebrated for a long time! As Gloria Steinem puts it, “the story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist or organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” We agree! The day is all about intersectionality, whether it’s the organizations that support International Women’s Day or the types of women it honors.
Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia observe it as a national holiday. Men honor their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, and others with flowers and small gifts. There may be cultural differences between countries, but women’s achievements are universally admired.
It may appear that we have come a long way already. Yes, despite some progress, a recent study of 145 countries found that there is still a gender gap. Iceland has come the closest to achieving economic equality, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment, and that’s a good start. However, in some countries, such as Yemen, women are only considered half-witnesses in court cases. They aren’t even allowed to leave the house without their husband’s consent. IWF was founded with the goal of achieving gender equality for all countries. Because, as we all know, increasing global awareness of women’s plight helps to elevate all women.

International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate ordinary women who have made extraordinary contributions to the history of their countries and communities. It is also a day to reflect on progress, call for change, and honor acts of courage and determination by ordinary women.
Despite unprecedented progress around the world, no country has achieved gender equality. We landed on the moon fifty years ago, and in the last ten years, we’ve discovered new human ancestors and taken the first photographs of a black hole.
